What an agent does that a chatbot does not
A chat assistant answers questions and hands you code to paste. A coding agent acts: it inspects your project, decides which files to change, writes them, runs the project and reads what went wrong. If the build fails, it reads the error and tries again.
PolyDev puts that loop on an Android phone. You describe the task in plain language, for example “add a login page and an orders table”. The agent plans the work, edits files, runs commands in the terminal and shows you the result in a live preview.

Why run an agent on the phone itself
Real environment. The agent is not guessing in a sandbox. It works in a genuine Alpine Linux userland, so a project that runs there behaves like it would on a laptop.
Your code stays with you. Projects live in your device's local storage. Only the text the agent needs for a request goes to the model provider you chose.
Any model. Use the built-in free tier, bring a key from one of 15+ providers, or run a local model with Ollama. Switch whenever you like.
Honest limits. A phone is slower than a workstation for heavy compiling, and the agent needs an internet connection to reach a hosted model. The terminal, editor and local dev server work offline.
